Did you know that Bromwich+Smith is currently looking to add new members to our outstanding team? It’s true! One of the current positions we are hiring for is for Proposal Specialists within our Administration team. We sat down with two Proposal Specialists, to learn more about their role.

As one of the fastest growing insolvency firms in Canada, Bromwich+Smith’s goal is to help an ever-greater number of Canadians find relief from debt. We love to work here because we love to help people. We are a professional organization with a purpose to alleviate the challenges of debt for Canadians.  Importantly, we are not a collection agency, nor do we lend money to people; we work directly with clients and their creditors to solve client challenges.

Walk us through your journey at Bromwich+Smith?

Ashley: I have been working at Bromwich+Smith for almost six months as a Proposal Specialist in the Administration team. My career background is primarily retail management, and I really wanted to continue a customer service role but I wanted to explore outside the retail world. I was looking for a better work life balance- the typical things, better hours and a competitive living wage with better benefits. I was really excited to accept this role, and the perks that come with working at Bromwich+Smith!

Donna: I have been with Bromwich+Smith since May 2021. Previously I was working at ATB in their Asset management department. I have knowledge in collections and came into the role with some understanding of insolvency prior to applying.

Was there an education requirement for your role?

Ashley: Prior to Bromwich+Smith, I had no experience in Insolvency. The managers are great at training, and open to helping me learn about finances and insolvency. That said I know there is always room for improvement, so I chose to enroll in the Insolvency Administration course this fall to further my knowledge.

Donna: I have taken the Canadian Securities Course and  I am planning on taking my Insolvency Admin course this fall. While neither courses are required, I love expanding my knowledge to better help my clients!

What is a typical day for a Proposal Specialist?

Ashley: A typical day, well there is no typical day! Everything differs day to day. Mostly, it’s answering any questions or concerns the clients have, while also gathering any information needed for the creditors. We make sure everything is up to date and running smoothly. Life is different for each client, and we try to accommodate accordingly. No two situations are the same, so I'm constantly finding ways to help them the best way we can, so they are successful during and after their proposal is finished.

Donna: For me, a typical day involves - contacting the client regarding their arrear, completing tasks that have been assigned, answering emails and phone calls, finding ways to help our clients that are struggling and offer them solutions based on their situation. What I like best with my role is I that I get an opportunity to help people and make difference in their lives.

What qualities do you think a candidate needs to be successful in this role?

Ashley: I think this is a great career for anyone with strong communication skills and the willingness to help people succeed. Any type of prior Insolvency, banking or insurance background would be an asset.

Donna: I think some who comes from a customer service or even a call centre role would be helpful. Strong communication skills, and someone who is organized and independent would also be assets.

What do you wish you knew before you started this position?

Ashley: Honestly, I wish I would have known how rewarding this job is. I have always worked in customer service but being able to help people get their lives back on track is truly rewarding!

Is there anything else you think potential Bromwich+Smith employees should know?

Ashley: Working for Bromwich+Smith is really rewarding- both mentally but there are also amazing perks that come along with this job. The vacation time, flex/wellness hours, benefits and the Health Care Spending Account are just a few benefits employees receive.

Donna: Bromwich+Smith has some great perks, including good vacation time off as well as flex/wellness hours, benefits and the Healthcare spending account! I like that we have the options with our retirement funds to invest in either RRSP or TFSA.
